Mountaineer Gas, the state’s largest natural gas distribution company, provides service to Jefferson County. It is the only natural gas distribution company in West Virginia that has its own training center, customer service center, and corporate office in West Virginia. The company serves 49 of the 55 counties in West Virginia and maintains nearly 6,000 miles of pipeline.
The cost of natural gas in West Virginia is also comparatively lower than the surrounding locations. For example, in 2014 natural gas for industrial customers averaged $4.80 per thousand cubic feet in West Virginia, compared to $5.80 in Maryland and $5.24 in Virginia. The Mountaineer Gas website hosts information about specific rates and tariffs for large industrial users and other rate categories.
While Jefferson County does not currently source its own natural gas, the county recently performed a study that concluded that it is feasible to bring natural gas to Jefferson County. The county is now working with key stakeholders to fund and implement a natural gas program in the near future.
