Jefferson County hosts a number of key federal agencies that trust their critical national security work to our community. The Department of State Diplomatic Security Service, the Defense Intelligence Agency, the United Nations’ U.S. Military Observers Group, the U.S. Air Force Office of Special Investigations, and the Department of Defense’s Special Operations Groups are among the many agencies that have sent personnel to be educated in Jefferson County.
This national security training and services are primarily carried out at three major facilities:
- United States Customs and Border Protection Advanced Training Center maintains its cutting edge advanced training facility in Harpers Ferry. This center is the mandatory advanced training for a number of Homeland Security agencies and it trains and educates Border Patrol personnel who play an essential role in the defense of our country. This center is one of five in the Customs and Border Patrol network, including a Border Patrol academy in New Mexico, a field operations academy in Georgia, and two K-9 training facilities in Texas and Virginia.
- Summit Point Diplomatic Security Training Center provides high-performance driver education, emergency training, and specialty firearms training for local and federal law enforcement through BSR, the recognized leader in vehicle anti-terrorist and criminal activity training for military and governmental applications worldwide.
- United States Coast Guard Operations Systems Center opened its state-of-the art facility in Jefferson County in 2014, which accommodates 300 of its full-time employees. This new 43,000 sqft office provides full life-cycle support for operationally focused Coast Guard automated information systems, which support the Coast Guard’s strategic missions.
In bordering Berkeley County, there is an FBI Fingerprint Storage Facility and the 167th Airlift Wing of the West Virginia Air National Guard.
These government agencies represent a wide variety of products, services, and expertise, but they all have one thing in common. They entrust the growth and success of their enterprises, and the safety of the nation, to the business-friendly location and policies of Jefferson County, West Virginia.
