Jefferson County, West Virginia Demographics & Statistics
Thanks in part to the continual in-migration of residents from the adjacent, higher-priced areas of Northern Virginia and Maryland, the Jefferson County community is vibrant and growing. Since 2000, our community has been one of the fastest-growing localities in West Virginia, experiencing more than 30 percent growth in population. This growth is significantly more than the neighboring Maryland communities of Montgomery County and Frederick County, which attests to the fact that our community is attractive, affordable, and well located.
Contributing to this growth is no doubt the fact that Jefferson County is a desirable location for younger and middle-aged community members. The average median age in the county is 38.5, and less than 14 percent of the total population is age 65 and older. Almost half of the population over the age of 25 is at least some level of college educated, and the unemployment rate steadily hovers around 4.6 percent. This equates to an active, educated community that works hard and relaxes together.
